UK Property Update: New affordable ‘green’ homes for Brixton
Brixton Water Lane Brixton residents are set to benefit from the arrival of over 30 much-needed affordable homes after Genesis Housing Group received planning permission for a scheme in Brixton Water Lane.
The 31 homes, which will be the first to be developed by Genesis Housing Group in the borough, will include several four-bedroom family homes and will be available for local people at affordable rents or to purchase through a shared ownership scheme.
MDR Associates have designed the homes, which feature many environmentally friendly aspects including a ‘car free’ agreement, which will help reduce levels of vehicle activity in the area and sustainable ‘green roofs’ to enhance the design of the homes.
Steve Coleman, Genesis Group Development Director said; “This is our first project in Lambeth, and we are extremely pleased to be providing much needed affordable homes for families and bringing new homes to a neglected area of Brixton.”
Councillor John Kazantzis, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Housing said: “Lambeth Council is committed to encouraging and promoting sustainability and environmentally friendly projects, and this scheme hits all the right ‘green buttons’. It represents a win-win for all of us as there will be more affordable homes built in the borough that have good green credentials and the new homes will help improve the local area.”
Work on site is due to start in the New Year and the homes are expected to be completed by summer 2008.
