MONACO
Monaco is a country that thrives on its reputation for glitz and glamour and is the playground for Europe’s elite and is barely 2 sq km. The year’s big event (which is synonymous with Monaco) is the Formula One Grand Prix, held in May, when the top drivers turn the city streets literally into a racing track.
In January there is also a Monte Carlo Motor Rally and the International Circus Festival with the International Fireworks Competition from Monaco Harbour in July.
If you are looking to buy property in Monaco you will not be alone as most of the people who live in Monaco come from somewhere else, drawn by the sun, glamour and tax-free income.
Monte Carlo's beach is a great place for people watching and the limos outside the Casino are worth a look.
Some of the best shopping districts in town include the areas around the Hôtel de Paris and the Casino, or the Allie Serge-Diaghilev. For cheaper shopping try the shops around the Boulevard des Moulins, rue Grimaldi, and rue Princesse Caroline. There is also an interesting market at Les Puces de Fontveille, held on Saturdays between 10 am and 5 pm.
Monaco is essentially four areas:
Monaco Ville is the old town and built on the rock which enjoys great sea views and choice of restaurants.
La Condamine is the port and the best place to look for hotels
Monte Carlo is the glitzy area to the north of the port where Monte Carlo's beach is a great place for people watching and the limos outside the Casino are worth a look.
Fontvieille is an industrial area south west of the port.
A system of public lifts carries pedestrians up and down Monaco's steep hillside.
